The El Paso High football team bounced back from their loss to Austin by defeating Mountain View 21-12 last Friday.
“I feel good, I think we deserved to win that game. It was a lot of us that were sad about losing the claw game so getting a win was a must for us,” senior Diego Gutierrez said.
The win gave them a boost of confidence ahead of their toughest test yet as the Tigers prepare to face Del Valle High School tonight.
“I feel like the chemistry was better than the claw game since this was the second game played together,” senior quarterback, Martin Gonzalez said after throwing three touchdowns in the win.
Dominic Vielma led the team with 13 total tackles including 10 solo tackles.
“It feels good, there is still a lot of stuff I could work on, but it wasn’t just me it was my team. So, being able to help my team means a lot,” Vielma said.
The team found success on the ground, rushing for a total of 271 yards, including 172 from running back, Chris Valenzuela.
“I felt I deserved it because I was helping my teammates get up when they were down, and I’m just shooting the best out of it,” senior, Esteban “Scooby” Contreras said.
Vielma, Contreras and Valenzuela were named as the team’s players of the week for their performances against Mountain View.
The Tigers now turn their attention to one of the city’s top teams, the Del Valle Conquistadores. who defeated Franklin last week, 24-14.
“I feel really good, everybody knows they’re a good team, but looking at them there’s a lot of mistakes…so I think we could take advantage and a get a sneaky win,” senior Diego Gutierrez said.
However, Vielma sees the challenge of this game differently.
“I feel like it’s going to be a tough game, but we have to go out there and play their only human too, so we just got to go out and not be afraid of the name,” Vielma said.
