On the heels of a third area championship in the last four seasons, the Tigers volleyball team dominated district play in 2024, but ultimately fell short of a third consecutive area title after losing to Amarillo.
El Paso clinched their third consecutive district championship after defeating Chapin in five sets on Oct. 11.
“Our message to the team was to reflect on the many accomplishments, memories and challenges they faced to get to the point they were at,” head coach, Yesenia Alarcon Ortega said. “Motivating them and of course, challenging them to want more and work for more as the Off Season comes around once more.”
“Our captains are incredibly focused on what they want, and they push everyone to match that level of intensity. They bring the energy and focus needed to help us achieve our goals, whether they’re on the court or not,” senior, Hannah Gracia said.
Hannah suffered a dislocated shoulder during practice early in the season, just as a crucial game against Eastlake approached.
“It was really hard to watch because I wanted to be out there with the girls and compete,” Hannah said.
Despite Hannah’s absence, she praised her teammates’ performance, noting that while they initially seemed a bit unsettled by the sudden changes, they quickly adapted.
Team captain, Angelique Delahoussaye, reflected on their experiences of overcoming adversity.
“Our biggest challenge this season was connecting as a team. We had to regain our confidence and come together,” Angelique said. “We talked things out if we had any problems, and that really helped us bond.”
Angelique reflected on how the experience has shaped her both as a player and a person.
“On the court, I’ve become more confident and a better leader,” Angelique said. “Off the court, I feel the same. I’ve developed more discipline and a strong sense of what’s right and wrong, which has grown throughout my time in this program.”
Amanda Mendoza , who was named EPISD athlete of the week during September.
“I am very grateful I got selected and very honored. It just shows how hard I work during practice and games how hard I help the program,” Amanda said.
The team saw their season come to a close after a hard-fought battle against the Armadillos, falling in three sets in the regional playoffs.
While this loss may mark the end of their playoff run, players feel the team built a foundation for future success and will continue to be a force in district play.
“I feel that our team did the best we could, and I don’t regret anything,” Alexa Madrid said.
She highlighted beating Chapin as the season’s most memorable moment, praising the team’s energy and unity. Alexa also shared that volleyball taught her valuable lessons she’ll carry beyond high school and believes facing a strong opponent like Amarillo will help shape the team’s future growth and resilience.
Senior, Isabella Hernandez reflected on her final season with a message to younger teammates.
“I hope I helped the younger players feel more confident and supported while showing them what leadership looks like.” She shared her gratitude for the fans, teammates, and experiences that shaped her journey, leaving a legacy of approachable leadership and resilience. Though bittersweet, Bella’s parting message inspires hope for the future of Tigers volleyball.
Coach Alarcon Ortega expressed appretiation for the team and the dedication they displayed throughout the year.
“After the many challenges we faced this volleyball season with injuries and the need to move student-athletes into different positions, we are extremely proud of our team. They handled and adjusted to anything that the program asked of them,” coach Alarcon Ortega said. “Our Senior leadership stepped up and guided our underclassmen on the court as the season continued. As a program , we will continue to strive to make deep playoff runs and raise the level of play.”
