Senior El Paso High Basketball player Owen Bustillos has had a successful 2023-24 season and is hoping to help his team make it to the state playoffs. His dedicated work ethic in combination with good team chemistry has proven beneficial for the Tigers.
The team currently has 14 wins with 12 losses with six games remaining and are in third place in district play. They’ll need to finish in the top four to qualify for the playoffs.
“My goal this season is to be First-Team All-District and to get a gold ball for the team,” Owen said.
Owen and his teammates are hoping to go as far into the playoffs as they can by doing their best in practice and dedicating as much of their time as possible to basketball.
“My workouts consist of a lot of dribbling, and shooting. They help me get past my defenders in the games,” Owen said.
Freshmen coach, Elijah Escobar, was Owen’s coach in 7th grade and has seen his improvement over the years.
“Now I get to be a part of his highschool career and there’s been a lot of growth. We look towards him for that three point shot, we look towards him to create the tone of the game, you know the tempo,” Escobar said.
The team’s recent success against Northwest Austin in the McDonald’s All-American tournament was led by Owen and his 14 points. Owen is one of the team’s top scorers averaging over 12 points per game this season.
“He really takes control of everything and is really a leader for everyone on the team,” senior Diego Rivera said.
