The 2023 El Paso High boys cross country team repeated as district and bi-district champions and for the first time–regional champions.
“We’re hoping for a team podium (at state), top five at least, that’s what we’re expecting,” junior Miles Westbrook said.
Although the Tigers didn’t finish in the top five, they did finish eighth overall.
The El Paso High team was really looking forward to pushing themselves to stay busy and do their best at state.
“We’ve been working really hard and to see this big payoff is just amazing,” senior Leo Valenzuela said.
The team was led by Miles who placed 15th overall individually saying, “I’ll be back,” after a strong finish to the season.
“I’m just gonna keep doing the same training I’m doing, stay consistent, make sure I’m doing everything I can, working as much as possible,” Miles said.
Members of the team said they had high hopes going into the race, but never envisioned they would place first overall.
“Before the race, we were all nervous, but we were ready and locked in and afterwards when we figured out we won it was pretty emotional for everybody because we never expected it,” junior Lorenzo Shields said. “Obviously I’m really excited, but I’d also say I’m pretty proud because it took the whole like group effort.”
Everyone on the team is happy about how well they performed, the closely knitted team pushed each other to the top.
“It’s really only a good thing, you come back home and see your friends and everyone tells each other how good they do,” Miles said.
