As fall nears, so does homecoming season for the Tigers. The team is looking to earn their first win of the year tonight against San Elizario after an 0-2 start.
After losing their first game of the season to Gadsden, the Tigers were not pleased about the outcome of the score and felt like the score did not reflect their efforts and achievements on the field.
“Honestly, we did all the right things in the last game. I think we beat them statistically. They just beat us on some defensive stops that could have been prevented,” senior Pablo Gonzalez said.
Following the results of week one, the Tigers were looking forward to bouncing back against Hanks. As a result, the Tigers lost 37-20.
“Like I said, we just have to fix our mistakes and what we did bad, and everything will be good,” sophomore Raymund Contreras said.
After the result of their second game, the coaches recognized some players for their hard work against Hanks. The players of the week were Edgar Garcia in defense, Raymund Contreras in special teams, and Scooby Contreras in offense.
“There was Edgar Garcia. He’s an outside backer and also our team captain. He was just flying around making tackles and making plays. He really led us and put us in the right spot,” Defensive Coordinator, David Cortinas said.
With the Tigers game against San Elizario right around the corner, preparations are being done on the defensive and offensive side of the ball.
“They have a triple-option attack. So we each have a job to do. Someone has to tackle a fullback, someone has to tackle a quarterback and then someone has a pitchman,” Said Coach Cortinas
Despite the 0-2 start, the Tigers are hopeful they’ll earn their first win on homecoming night.
“This is the homecoming game. We’re really confident about how we’re gonna play and I think we’re gonna stop them,” senior Edgar Garcia said.
Head coach, Ray Aguilar, shared a similar feeling ahead of the game against his former team, where he coached prior to taking over at EPHS.
“We’re not worried about what happened before. We’re not worried about what’s happening in the future. We’re just trying to win now,” Coach Aguilar said.
